If you’re a native speaker of English or someone who just wants to get started teaching English online – this post is for you. This list will go over some of the most popular English teaching websites, what you need to apply, and how much you can earn. I’ve included whether or not I think it’s hard or easy to get a job at that place based on qualifications required and the application process.
See the table at the end if you want an overview!
Skooli – Hard
You can create your own schedule with this site and earn between $15-$25/hour. They don’t list their pay and instead say it’s “based on qualifications”. Other sources gave me the range I found above. Looks like you’ll have to apply to find out the rate you would personally receive. They offer a Virtual whiteboard you can use for lessons. When you go online, you will receive tutoring requests right then and there. Skooli does require either a Bachelor’s degree or relevant teaching license. (TEFL for example.)
Whales English – Hard
If you’re a native English speaker from USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland or New Zealand – you can work with Whales. You will need a Bachelor’s degree, teaching cert and minimum of 1 year instructing children. The classes are 50 minutes and pay $18-27. This is more of a regular job since you’ll have to commit to a regular schedule for a year.
Cambly – Easy
This site is unlike a traditional teaching platform since you get paid to just chat with people in English. You can work whenever you’d like and earn about $0.17 per minute which is about $10.20 an hour. This rate is much lower than the other sites, but less effort and credentials are required.
Verbling – Medium
You can set your own rates on Verbling, but typically teachers will charge between $15-$25 per hour. You can teach a variety of languages here other than English. You also don’t need to be a native speaker. As long as you have some formal or informal experience teaching that language, you should be able to get admitted to the platform.
SkimaTalk – Easy
The classes here are 25 minutes long and you can choose as few or as many as you want to teach. You don’t need any certs or teaching experience. Because of this, you’ll have to do 3 classes for free before getting paid. After that you receive $8 per class. You will have to be conscious of building a brand on here, since you will be competing with other instructors to get lessons booked.
Open English – Medium
You must be a native English speaker from North America to qualify for this site. Teaching certs are preferred but not required. You can also apply to teach Brazilian Portuguese, French and Italian on here. The site serves native Spanish speakers wanting to learn these languages, so it’s a plus if you can speak some Spanish but it’s not required. You’ll have to commit to at least 10 hours per month and will earn $7-$13 an hour.
Magic Ears – Medium
You don’t need to be a native English speaker on this site, but you need to be able to speak at a high level and understand idioms. You need a bachelor’s degree and ESL teaching cert. Unfortunately if you live in California you cannot work at this site. If you don’t have the required cert, this site offers it for only $20! The application will include both recorded and live demos. You’ll have to commit for 6 months for an unspecified amount of time, and you would earn “up to” $26 an hour. The exact amount you’re offered will depend on your interview.
Learnlight – Medium
Teach business professionals in English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, Mandarin, Japanese or Russian! You do not need to be a native speaker, just proficient and preferably with a business background. You will need a teaching cert for the language you want to teach and 2 years experience teaching that language. The average pay rate is $15 an hour.
Qkids – Hard
If you live in the US or Canada, have a bachelor’s degree and obtain a teaching cert you can teach here. You’ll have to commit for a 6 month contract and can earn $12-16 an hour. The lessons run for 30 minutes and the application process includes both recorded and live demos. You’ll only receive $6.00/hour for the trial classes you must do during the application process.
